Saturn in Sagittarius and Mula Nakshatra: Spiritual, Intellectual Awakenings and Material Discord
Saturn retrogrades back in into Mula Nakshatra (Sagittarius 0-13.20) June 5 – November 28, 2018 so it is a big and subtle transition happening starting on Tuesday.
Saturn in Mula will not let you escape from the past, symbolized by Ketu. It requires that you take responsibility for past karma and do something to make it right. Similar to one of the 12 steps from the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) program, one has to make amends for past actions where we may have caused hurt or injury. This will be a theme for the coming years. Best advice is to extend your hand out first in a gesture of offering to say that you are sorry and do something to address your mistakes.
This transit can make us face and recognize the often hidden, shadowy, ugly parts of our personality. This gives us the opportunity to bear witness to our flaws, accept them with compassion, purify them and become a better person. It is never an easy process, but Saturn will not let up on us until we work through the process. Draw on your wisdom and insights from the past and from past lives to make the transformations now. Let go of the past and stop beating yourself up for what you did wrong.
If you make amends in the present, then all is healed. The 4th pada of Sagittarius (10-13.20) is the first stop owned by Cancer and tends to bring up emotional anguish and runs until July 20th. We went through this transit during the first 3 months of the year. There is a need for deep transformation of the past here or there will be a feeling of unconscious dread and insecurity and deep emotional grunge. Sudden unexpected can take place that may separate the soul from its material attachments. Deep transformational work will be needed here. If you are running Ketu or Saturn dashas or if you are Sagittarius, Virgo, Gemini or Aquarius or Capricorn or have moon in Sagittarius, you will feel the impact of this one the most.
Anxiety levels are higher and if you rush around recklessly or are careless, mistakes are made, so slow down, drink your calming teas and take care of your health. Avoid the heavy self-deprecating energy that Saturn can create here and praise yourself instead. Be kind to yourself and accept your imperfections. This is a repeat of territory that we went through January 26 – March 15, 2017 and you may continue to feel heavy so do your meditation and yoga to get balance energy from fun loving Venus and it will lighten.
The positive side of this transit is that if you take up the call very deep spiritual experience can manifest so for spiritual aspirants and yogis, it can be a very deep time to go deep into meditation and take meditation retreats.
Mula consists of nine stars at the end of Scorpio and is the place of the center of the galaxy, which Western Astrologers are fond of calling the Galactic Center, a wonderful part of the night sky that looks like a white river.
Mula means “root” or “the center” and people who have a sun, moon or ascendant lord in this constellation are very direct and do not like to beat around the bush. This is the core of the galaxy and it is ruled by Ketu who wants to get to the core of everything: hidden motives, events, core roots.
Ketu is connected to past lives and Mula wants to tie up all the talents from one’s past lives and bring them together. It seeks deeply for the truth of existence. Ketu is not really happy in Capricorn where its deep spiritual striving is at odds with Saturn’s hard work ethic.
Prash Trivedi notes that the deity of Mula is Nirrtti, the Goddess of Calamity and yet she resides in the lucky sign of Sagittarius, which in mythology means she may destroy ignorance to reveal deep truths. Ironically, Nirrtti, is connected to the peak of material achievement and yet the nature of this nakshatra is very spiritual in her quest to go beyond the domain of ego and self-centeredness. I will be interested to see if our politicians change with this transit. This star can give power and influence and great material accomplishment and can confer magical powers but often it releases its energy in an explosive manner, which is so true of Ketu!
Still with Ketu in Shravana, the need is to do spiritual service work and seva (selfless service) to transform the past. This is a time to help those in need and to give to charity as a way of purging past mistakes. There is a saying that it is easy to a saint on a mountaintop, but the real proof is when you return to the marketplace and with so many in need of help and services from the recent disasters. Through the practice of seva, one can definitely work with others in a tangible way to give back to the planet.
Mula combines the energy of Jupiter and Ketu, hence, it initiates spiritual transformations for the better. With Jupiter’s grace it can confer magical powers to help those in need with Grace.
